I Came Here to Leave

I

As I entered my room
I felt something fall
Onto my head
But there was nothing
Or so I thought

It must have been my hair
Fallen forward

To fall forward…

Before me today
A leaf had fallen

As I left my room
I felt underfoot
Water had fallen
I realised then
I had mistook.

II

There’s miles and miles between us;
Miles of love and lust

Why
Did I come here?
I came here
I came here to
I came here to leave

You left me in autumn
On ochre ground
Surrounded by leaves
Like onion skins

I tore each dark cloud down
From the low-ignited sky
Until I felt the rain
Behind my scalded eye

Why
Did I come here?
I came here
I came here to
I came here to leave in autumn.
